Artist Profile: Amy Tomasevicz

For Amy Tomasevicz, creating art isn't simply about reproducing what she sees. It's an opportunity to take what is familiar and transform it into something unexpected.

The Columbus artist describes her specialty as "altered reality," using pastel, mixed media and alcohol inks to create expressive works that play with color, texture, movement and perception.

On Saturday, September 19, visitors to Fall for the Arts will have an opportunity to experience Amy's work and meet the artist when she exhibits at Duster's in downtown Columbus.

AN ARTIST AND EDUCATOR

Art and education have been closely connected throughout Amy's life.

She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1971 and a Master of Education from UNL in 1977. Her career as an art educator earned her recognition as Secondary Art Educator of the Year, while her commitment to the arts has continued well beyond the classroom.

Amy has been involved with state and national art education organizations and has served in leadership roles within Nebraska's arts community. She is a member of Red Path Gallery, the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs and Impact Nebraska Artists and has served on the boards of the Columbus Arts Council and Bone Creek Museum.

ALTERING REALITY

Experimentation and curiosity are at the heart of Amy's artistic practice.

Rather than being tied to one medium, she explores the different possibilities offered by pastel, mixed media and alcohol ink. Her work can move between recognizable places and forms and something more abstract, allowing color, line and texture to reshape reality.

Amy also works in pottery, embracing the freedom and intuitive nature of working three-dimensionally.

AN AWARD-WINNING CAREER

Over the years, Amy's work has earned recognition throughout Nebraska and beyond.

Her honors include Judge's Awards and Awards of Excellence through Columbus Area Artists, Awards of Excellence through the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs, and Best of Show and Best in Division honors at the Nebraska State Fair.

She is a Signature Member of the Association of Nebraska Art Clubs and has also received an Award of Excellence in the national Light, Space & Time art exhibition.

Yet Amy's contribution to the arts goes beyond the work she creates.

She continues to share her knowledge with others through workshops and arts programming. Most recently, she led an Alcohol Ink Workshop through the TRAX Creative District, introducing participants to techniques ranging from colorful floral designs to more advanced landscape compositions.
