Fall for the Arts

Meet the Musician: Dr. Oscar Vazquez Medrano

Last Updated 8/24/2026

For Dr. Oscar Vazquez Medrano, music is both an international language and a deeply personal connection to culture, history and community.

An accomplished pianist, educator and scholar, Vazquez Medrano has performed throughout his home country of Mexico as well as across the United States and in Slovakia. His performances showcase a particular passion for Mexican and Spanish music while also drawing from the works of celebrated composers such as Frédéric Chopin and Franz Liszt.

Today, he brings that wealth of musical experience to Columbus.

Vazquez Medrano is the owner and primary instructor at Vazquez Music Studio in downtown Columbus, where he shares his knowledge and love of music with local students. He also teaches piano at Central Community College and serves as an accompanist for choirs. Area audiences may also recognize him from his frequent performances at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church.

His work extends beyond performing and teaching. As a specialist in the music of Mexican composer Manuel M. Ponce, Vazquez Medrano serves as an editor and guest artist for The Ponce Project, an initiative dedicated to bringing greater attention to Ponce's music and legacy.

That combination of performer, educator and scholar gives Vazquez Medrano a distinctive perspective at the piano. His performances connect audiences not only with the beauty of the music itself, but also with the culture and stories behind it.

During Fall for the Arts, visitors will have an opportunity to experience his artistry in an intimate downtown setting when he performs at Cork & Barrel at 12:45 p.m.

It's exactly what Fall for the Arts is all about: discovering exceptional talent, experiencing something you may not encounter every day, and seeing the creativity that exists right here in our community.
